WWI Decorative Textile (Material Memory)

Year: 1910s

Origin: France

Donated By: Caroline Broadhead

This decorative textile holds a poignant history. It was presented to  Caroline’s grandmother by her fiancé, Caroline’s grandfather, upon his return from World War I. The piece serves as a souvenir of Les Halles  d’Ypres, crafted from printed, embroidered, and appliquéd silk with a delicate lace edge. Although Caroline is uncertain about the exact time it was created during the war, the imagery on the cloth contrasts starkly with the wartime memories her grandfather carried from Ypres, offering a unique connection to their history.
