Stalin Cross Stitch (Material Memory)

Year: 1941

Origin: Russia

Donated By: Lara Borisovna Smith

This cross stitch of Josef Stalin was stitched by Lara’s grandmother,  Paulina Petrova, in Moscow in 1941, while the German army was on the outskirts of the city.

To depict Stalin in any form was perilous at this time, if not completed to the highest standards, it could be considered defamation, with a consequence of ten years in the labour camp, without the right to receive letters. Lara is uncertain why her grandma created this remarkable textile artefact.
