Spage-Age Dress (Material Memory)

Year: 1960s

Origin: North London

Donated By: Amber Butchart

This dress, owned by Amber’s mum in the 1960s, was bought in the  suburbs of North London, but it speaks to the wider world of fashion politics and culture at this time.

With the space race raging, future ideas of design began to influence fashions, playing out Cold War concerns and intergalactic dreams on the bodies of consumers. As a lover of the 1960s film Barbarella as a teenager, Amber has a special place in her heart for this space age piece.
