‘Love of Sailors’ Pillow Sham (Material Memory)

Year: 1937

Origin: Germany

Donated By: Lara Borisovna Smith

This pillow sham (used to protect pillows from dust) was made  by Lara’s grandmother, Lydia Petrova, around 1937 in Moscow. It was rediscovered by Lara’s grandfather in their destroyed home in Berlin, in the summer of 1945, directly after the Second World War.

Lara believes her grandmother kept hold of it because of its lack of Nazi symbolism.
