Knitted Fair Isle Dress (Material Memory)

Year: 1997/1978

Origin: Scotland

Donated By: Jolene Crawford

This knitted Fair Isle dress was knitted by Jolene’s mum in the late  1970s, when she had also knitted Jolene a baby version. She has clear memories of her mum wearing it at parents evening, and feeling embarrassed, but now loves to wear it herself.

Jolene’s mum grew up on the island of Burra, Shetland where Fair Isle knitting was taught in schools. Just one generation back, Jolene’s grandma and great aunt had to knit for subsistence. Once they had  enough ‘ganseys’, they could exchange them for essentials like flour and sugar at the local shop.
