Grandma’s Hand Fan (Material Memory)

Year: 1960s

Origin: Pakistan

Donated By: Bushra Rashid

This fan holds a special connection to Bushra’s grandmother, who  acquired it in the 1960s from her village in Pakistan, where locals crafted these pieces. In 1987, her grandmother brought it to England when Bushra’s brother was born.

To personalise and distinguish these fans, it was common to decorate them with scrap materials. Over time, Bushra’s grandma added to the fan and left it with her family in England. Bushra has maintained and still uses it, keeping her grandmother’s memory alive.
