Dressing Gown, Rag Rug, Patchwork and Memory Quilt (Material Memory)

Year: 1940s

Origin: Lancashire

Donated By: Pat Fleming

Pat and her family are keen crafters and skilled in the art of upcycling, often with the intent of preserving memories within the fabric. Amongst their impressive collection of textiles, Pat has shared with us a beautifully embroidered 1940s dressing gown, made by Pat’s mum, who sadly passed away when Pat was 21.

Alongside this is Pat’s memory quilt, made from a multitude of fabrics from family members – Pat is able to pick out each fabric and connect a person or memory to it, such as fabrics from her son’s bed and fabric from her father. The rag rug is also a family favourite, made from the green armchair cover her son loved to sit in.
