David Crosby T-shirt (Material Memory)

Year: 1990s

Origin: Manchester

Donated By: Lee Richard Walsh

Lee obtained this t-shirt from Manchester fashion icon and friend Richard Creme, who introduced renowned designers like Comme Des Garçons and Issey Miyake to the city. Richard ran an exclusive  boutique and had star clients like Bruce Springsteen, Duran Duran, Tony Wilson, and Prince.

Lee fondly recalls the sense of awe upon entering the shop and shaking hands with Richard, who stood at 7”4 with a size 19 shoe – Lee felt childlike beside him. The clothes he sold were rare, beautiful, and unique. Lee couldn’t afford to shop at Richard Creme; but he used to let him barter on price and, on one occasion, design his Spring/Summer window display in exchange for garments.

This t-shirt, featuring David Crosby’s 1982 arrest, is over two decades old and still garners compliments when worn. Lee wore it on stage during a 2003 performance supporting The Rolling Stones at the Paris Olympia, with his Blackburn band, The Burn.
