Conversations at the Tablecloth (Material Memory)

Year: 1930s/1940s

Origin: Lancashire

Donated By: Sophie Lamin

This tablecloth, passed down from Sophie’s Great Aunt Elsie, is  believed to have been crocheted by their mother, Elizabeth Barnes, who worked as a ring spinner for Nicholas Worsley Ltd at Hazel Mill in Haslingden. Her free time was spent with crochet projects and in this case, for Elsie’s bottom drawer, before her wedding in 1940. Over the years, delicate repairs have been made, evidence of its use on a kitchen table where the two sisters held cherished conversations.
