50 Nights in a Forgotten Town (Material Memory)

Year: 2022

Origin: Blackburn

Donated By: Alan True

50 Nights In A Forgotten Town’ is a visual narrative of social heritage, a journey through time, depicted through the jackets Alan wore on Friday (and Saturday) nights out in 2022. These jackets carry history – one a charity shop find from 1990, another belonged to his dad, and the rest collected over the years. Each jacket and the badges adorning them, were inspired by the actors, artists, films, and music that Alan admires. There is a story behind every badge, which is celebrated alongside the framed jackets.

Initially, this project served as a tribute to Blackburn, Alan’s hometown, and a means to celebrate the good times, art, and fashions that he is passionate about. It also pays homage to the distinct characters and interactions that are exclusive to the nightlife scene, even during challenging times. Ultimately, it recognizes the fragile yet defiant existence of pubs, sadly exemplified by the closure of one of Alan’s favourites, The Napier, in December 2022.

“This project is a heartfelt salute and thank you to those still enjoying weekend nights out.”
